Burana Tower

Burana Tower is one of the most important historical monuments in Kyrgyzstan and a famous landmark from the ancient Silk Road era. The tower is a large brick minaret that dates back to the 10th–11th centuries and is one of the oldest architectural structures in Central Asia.

Burana Tower was originally part of the ancient city of Balasagun, which once served as a major cultural and trading center along the Silk Road.

Today, the site is an open-air historical complex where visitors can explore ruins, ancient stone carvings, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding valley.

Location

Burana Tower is located in the Chuy Region in northern Kyrgyzstan.

Distance from major cities:

  • About 80 km from Bishkek

  • About 12 km from Tokmok

Because of its close distance to Bishkek, Burana Tower is one of the most popular day trip destinations from the capital.

History of Burana Tower

The tower was built between the 10th and 11th centuries during the time of the Karakhanid Khanate.

At that time, the nearby city of Balasagun was a major center of trade, culture, and education on the Silk Road.

Originally, the tower was about 45 meters tall, but after several earthquakes over the centuries, its height decreased to about 25 meters today.

In the 1970s, restoration work helped preserve the tower and protect it from further damage.
